We have been working in the solar energy industry since 1988, and over the years, I’ve witnessed a remarkable transformation in how individuals and businesses perceive solar power for energy conservation. What was once considered an “alternative” source is now becoming the preferred source of energy. Solar energy has evolved from being merely an environmental choice to a smart financial investment one that offers consistent savings, sustainability, and substantial protection against rising electricity and fuel costs.
In today’s economic climate, where power tariffs continue to fluctuate and rise with higher consumption slabs, solar energy offers a stable, predictable, and cost-effective solution. A one-time investment in a solar project whether for water heating or rooftop systems can reduce monthly electricity bills by up to 70–90%, depending on system design and usage. The payback period has dropped significantly in recent years; most users now recover their investment within 3–5 years, after which solar power is practically free for a minimum of 20 years. For industrial and commercial establishments, accelerated depreciation benefits are also available.
For residential users and housing societies, electricity bills can be reduced to almost zero for the next 18–20 years, provided the systems are properly designed and installed. Subsidies are available for these categories under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijlee Yojana.
For residential installations:
• 1 kW system – ₹30,000 subsidy
• 2 kW system – ₹60,000 subsidy
• 3kW and above – ₹78,000 subsidy
Additionally, loans are available from banks, for rooftop system installations.
For housing societies: a subsidy of ₹18,000 per kW is available.
Electricity unit rates increase on average by 4% every year. For example, if a society’s current monthly bill is around ₹21,000 (at an average rate of ₹18.85 per unit), the savings over 20 years can amount to approximately ₹75 lakh. Net metering agreement with MSEDCL is valid for 20 years.
Technological advancements have also made modern solar systems more efficient, compact, and durable than ever before. With government subsidies, net metering policies, and easy financing options, switching to solar has become simple and practical for both homeowners and societies. Shadow free space on the terrace is the only requirement.
You may send me your latest MSEDCL bill on WhatsApp or Email, for free consultation. On studying your consumption pattern we will suggest proper system capacity, its costs and probable savings over next 20 years.
