Architect Kishori Arjunwadkar
Founder-Partner archi-O-sys architects, Proprietor at Studio Artistic

Pune-based architect and interior designer Kishori Arjunwadkar has worked on more than 150 projects so far. Her latest project includes designing a science center for children at Thane.

Interior Designing is an art and science which enhances the space by making it aesthetically pleasing to anyone who dwells in it. From a client’s perspective, while it needs to define and reflect their lifestyle, personality and flavour; it should be comfortable, functional and practical.
Space designing and planning is the basic element of interior design process. It considers how the space is to be used, defining zones where various activities will take place. The layout plan defines the circulation and movement patterns and the last step would be adding in furniture, types of equipment, and its placement in that space.

Every space has its purpose and vibes of its people. It should all come together in the design, says Kishori.  Aesthetics and function go hand-in-hand.  The convenience, the feel, and the comfort of the client matter eventually.  It gives me a sense of accomplishment by creating meaningful spaces and utilizing them to the optimum. That also keeps me challenged because every time it’s a new story with a new client and a novel creative tailor-made solution. And that’s my signature – a functional, elegant and clutter-free space.

Kishori hails from Thane. While she was always drawn to visual arts and creative expression, Kishori chose architecture over fine arts as it was artistic yet function-driven. She graduated from the prestigious Sir JJ College of Architecture, Mumbai. Post marriage she settled down in Pune with her husband Heramb Arjunwadkar, an architect as well. She practiced for a couple of years before and after marriage on various projects gradually carving a niche in interior designing. Starting from a few apartments, her work spoke for itself and projects started pouring in. The establishment of the firm archi-O-sys in 2004 was a natural outcome, which is in partnership with her husband. She has designed interiors for residential schemes, bungalows, farmhouses, commercial spaces and offices not only in Pune but in Wai, Belgaum, Thane and other locations as well.

The success of archi-O-sys lies in its cohesive system that binds all the agencies together. Along with regular in-house staff, there are more than 25 different agencies like carpenters, masons, contract-workers, electricians, etc. that come together for a single project. Timely completion, budget-oriented approach, smooth co-ordination between agencies, and overall a hassle-free experience are the qualities mentioned by the her clients in their testimonials.

The work requires invasion of private space and time of the client, which needs to be duly respected and valued.  At the same time, over-exceeding budgets leave a bad taste in the mouth. These things can be worked out with diligent planning. Once the appointment formalities and paperwork are completed, a detailed schedule is chalked out with the agencies and the project is executed. Over the years all these values have built-in a culture and strengthened cohesiveness.

Studio Artistic is the natural enhancement of Kishori’s creativity, crafting it into functional and beautiful signature designs of home décor items, corporate gifting like wall clocks, lamps, key-holders, creative mementos, etc.

Managing a predominantly male-dominated workforce, imbibing in them values of time management, precision, ethical practices and safety standards were the major challenges Kishori faced in the early stages of her practice. The persistent practice of these values by Kishori and her dedicated team of contractors has built trust and reliability. Her husband has been her pillar of strength throughout. Being in the same profession made things easier to understand and have a synergy.

Kishori comes across as a conscious and thoughtful person who has efficiently compartmentalized and balanced all the priorities. “Ambitions and family both are equally important, and one need not be sacrificed for the other”, says she.

Apart from her hobbies like reading and listening to music, she spares time to try her hand at different recipes and cuisines. Travel is one hobby she would like to pursue more in the future.
