Dr. Vinita Apte
Founder Director, TERRE Policy Centre
Look again at that pale blue dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. These were the words of world-famous American astronomer Carl Sagan. Her words about preserving and growing it add to them: Earth is humanity’s only home in this vast universe, providing us with a compelling reason to nurture and protect it.
Dr Vinita Apte is thus a leading light in the environmental movement through her the TERRE Policy Centre, a non-governmental organization. It’s a testament to what is achievable when passion meets purpose, embodying the ethos: To think is good, but to act is better. An acronym for Technology, Education, Research, and Rehabilitation for the Environment, it represents a comprehensive toolkit for addressing the ecological challenges of our time.
It came about in the year 2009 and stands witness to Dr Apte’s leadership skills with a profound commitment to leveraging technology, education, research, and rehabilitation to foster a sustainable future. What is truly shocking (for want of a better word!) is that it came about at the fag-end of a quarter-century-long stint with PSU banks in India! Dropping it all, she headed to Paris for the UN Environment Program in the year 2008. And never looked back. Today her initiatives span crucial environmental issues, including climate change, ozone layer protection, toxic chemicals, and biodiversity conservation. These not only aim to mitigate existing threats but also to prevent future crises through proactive measures.
With her at the helm, TERRE has embarked on several groundbreaking projects illustrating the organization’s innovative zeal for environmental conservation. The most notable is the afforestation initiative, which saw the planting of over 5 lacs indigenous saplings across India of which close to 4 lacs have survived and thrived. Another notable has been about mangrove restoration over hectares of land stretching between Raigad on Maharashtra’s Konkan coast all the way down to Kerala and the Andhra coast. Besides helping in carbon sequestration, these have helped enhance biodiversity and support local ecosystems.
Direct action aside, education and awareness form another cornerstone of TERRE’s strategy. It has seen Dr Apte champion initiatives like the national-level online environmental quiz competitions. With a reach of over 2.3 million students, it is fostering a generation that’s well-informed about ecological issues. Adding to it is the TERRE Olympiad with over 12 lakh students and the Dr Abdul Kalam fellowship that in the last five years has received over 6000 applications with close to 50 applicants benefitting directly.
In addition, TERRE’s efforts at addressing environmental and social needs has seen them distribute solar lamps and implement water harvesting systems in under-served areas underscoring the organization’s holistic approach to sustainability while integrating social upliftment with environmental sustainability that has positively transforemed the lives of close to 2000 families. These reflect Dr Apte’s profound belief in the interconnectedness of human and environmental well-being, a principle driving TERRE’s mission towards accelerating humanity’s response towards environmental degradation.
That said, the path to achieving their vision is fraught with challenges, including the need for constant CSR partnerships and effective marketing strategies. Experience has taught Dr Apte and her intrepid team that overcoming obstacles involves leveraging TERRE’s success stories to engage donor-partners and organizations, be they national or multinational, on the one hand, and affected recipients on the other. It has helped them expand their reach and enhance their capacity to drive positive change.
Leading from the front, Dr Apte has propelled TERRE to newer heights and garnered worldwide recognition that includes among others, the SIAM CSR Award 2019 and the Women of Excellence 2020. These stand as a testament to their significant contributions to environmental conservation and sustainability and reflect the broader impact of their work while serving as a source of inspiration for others to join the movement. The TERRE effect can be seen from the fact that their Policy arm has been working relentlessly year after year on international levels representing IUCN and UNFCC on matters relating to climate change – with its own dedicated pavilion/ presence, the only such from India! Her work at TERRE has taken her all over the world and quite possibly making her the ONLY Marathi women representing the country in the matter!
Professional accomplishments aside, Dr. Apte’s personality comes across clearly in her work. Her drive, compassion, and visionary outlook that she puts across forcefully as an accomplished anchor, actress and writer are the hallmarks of her leadership style, which embodies the spirit of TERRE’s motto, demonstrating a profound commitment to turning ideas into actions for real-world impact. Ever result-oriented, Dr. Apte fosters an organizational culture that values open communication, shared objectives, and a commitment to both professional and personal growth. All of this hasn’t gone unnoticed with the likes of ZEE TV awarding her under “Uncha mazha zhoka” for the year 2022 for her work. Besides the numerous awards and accolades, the one she cherishes most is the Aditya Birla Group-instituted “Mahatma Award” for the year 2021.
Dr. Vinita Apte’s leadership at the TERRE Policy Centre marks a significant milestone in the global environmental movement. Her work transcends traditional approaches to environmental conservation while embracing a holistic strategy that integrates social development with ecological sustainability. Through initiatives that span afforestation, education, empowerment, and innovation, Dr Apte is addressing the environmental challenges of the day besides laying the groundwork for a sustainable future. Ambitious and essential, it is a bulwark against the unprecedented environmental challenges we face today.
Dr Apte exemplifies what it means to be a woman of influence in 2024, inspiring countless others to take action for the planet. In doing so, she reminds us that while Earth is our only home in the vast universe, it is within our power to protect and preserve it for generations.
