We will understand brief history of electricity and how it developed all these years
Benjamin Franklin invented electricity in 1752. Actual use of electricity for running machines, illumination, road & home lighting was started after industrial revolution in Great Britain in late 18th Century.
Since India was under British rule and they wanted to manufacture textiles products locally. after 1850 power generation was commenced. Kolkata had first power generation in small size in 1879.whereas Mumbai saw first generating station operating in 1905.
After independence India adopted 5 years plan for development of nation. We constructed large dams, hydro and thermal power plants to boost industrial production.
We are blessed with coal mines and cola was major source of energy to run railways, generation of power.
India has come long way since independence in power generation & consumption. our total power generation stood at 400 GW. our per capita consumption has risen from 16 to 1200 now.
Even after so much development, our per capita consumption is much below developed countries. Canada is highest with 14,844, US -12,825 & south Korea 10,618.
Though urban India and major industrial, commercial cities like Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai are blessed with stabilised power supply, rural india the villages lagging in power supply and electrification. after 75 years of independence and much efforts by successive governments now almost 90 % of villages are electrified.
Electricity is growth engine of the development. But augmentation of electricity ,sources of electricity should be planned considering our environment, biodiversity, effects on plantations, health of citizens. We will learn about this angle of growth in electricity sources in next article.
