Smiita Deshpaande
Jewellery Business Consultant
“Jewelry is a woman’s best friend.” We have all heard this adage, and for most women, it holds true. But with Smiita Deshpaande, it is the other way round. She is jewelry’s best friend. Be it design, promotion of brands, or upskilling new people to enter the jewelry business, she has done it all, putting an extra shine on the glitter of gold and diamonds.
Smiita is a proud supporter of women’s entrepreneurship and believes that whatever that little opportunity comes their way, the country’s female population must choose entrepreneurship as a profession.
Indian women’s courage to walk the rough road to entrepreneurship in the last few years is commendable. Smiita is a business consultant and a mentor for the entrepreneurial growth of Indian women from cities, small towns, and remote villages.
Smiita says of these women entrepreneurs of India that their courage is indeed an inspiration to girls who dream of flying in the sky with their wings open. It’s time we celebrate their efforts and strive towards bringing back India’s days of glory. It leads to Smiita’s taking pains to help other small businesses like beauty parlours as well.
“If you have the fire in your belly and the will to do better each time, nothing can stop you from making progress.” Each time she mentors a group, her message emphasizes the above. If one doesn’t have the fire in the belly, success will always elude you.
Smiita’s entrepreneurial journey started three years ago. With no entrepreneurial experience on both sides of her family, it was a brave decision to jump into it. That said, the progress she’s seen is unprecedented. Her’s is a niche area of expertise. Having worked in the jewelry field for 15 years has made her an expert in every aspect of the business. The engagement started with no long-term goals; it was to do with help from a friend to set up his business. The entire process of turning the shiny material into breath-taking jewelry mesmerized her so much that she educated herself in every step of the process. She found a golden creative streak in herself, which helped her immensely when she went solo with her venture during the covid lockdown.
As a young girl, Smiita wanted to be a lawyer, but life had other plans. Losing her father unexpectedly gave her life a different twist, where she had to take on various responsibilities. She did not trash her dream, just delayed it a little, as her family needed her support more.
Smiita’s foray into consulting for jewelry wasn’t a pure cakewalk and as glamorous as it looks. It had its challenges. There are stalwarts of the industry, besides new brands popping up to make their mark every day.
Her USP is her creativity and her ability to listen to her clients well and understand their needs. These make her a force to be reckoned with, given how clients value what she adds to their ventures. The user-experience Smiita brings makes her a favourite with her clients, who share their business dreams and anxieties with her. She is quick to soothe their frayed nerves and has the strength to go after her dreams. She plays a crucial role in managing stocks, growth, improving sales, and training unskilled employees. Her venture specializes in creating brand awareness, setting up systems and processes, training and developing staff with jewellery product knowledge training, all of which lead to a more profitable venture.
Smitá is currently gearing up to help small jewelers across Maharashtra who have been in the profession for generations become successful brands and scale them to pitch themselves and their products to their prospective customers.
Daunting as it may sound, Smiita is not the one to give up. Her idol, Ms. Sudha Murthy, is her driving force, and even a small snippet from any of her books rejuvenates Smiita to face any adversity that comes her way. Her positivity comes from her ability to learn from every experience.
Smiita lives by her core values of following and setting ethical business practices and giving her everything to the associations she makes. That remains non-negotiable for any of her business dealings. Painstakingly, she has built a team across the country with similar values and ensures they always keep quality as their key differentiator.
Entrepreneurs keep their promises, no matter how great the personal sacrifice, and they try to do something better, faster, or cheaper. Smiita has this quiet self-assurance in her capability and potential to do something new for her patrons. She capitalizes and leverages her strengths smartly and understands that she needs to build competencies to excel in the dynamic business world.
Smiita knows her value as a mentor and business facilitator, and so do her partners, clients, and well-wishers. It wasn’t easy to set up her business initially. That said, she chooses not to dwell on it. She instead aims to help those on the path of entrepreneurship follow their dreams and find success.
While her engagements keep her super busy, she still finds time to read, write blogs, and create podcasts. She has created a lovely quote for herself with lines borrowed from Robert F “The world is waking up to a million possibilities. I have so many people to train and mentor. I have miles before I sleep, miles before I sleep.”
