Technologies for a Clean & Green World!

Abhay Puranik /Prasad Gokhle (Director)

Green Pumps & Equipments Pvt. Ltd.

Who says gold is found only in gold mines? At least that’s the view of Mr. Abhay Puranik and Mr. Prasad Gokhale of Green Pumps & Equipments Pvt. Ltd who see themselves as the future P & G in the world of submersible slurry pumps and aerators! They might not be in the business of beauty products but they certainly are in the business of cleanliness given that they specialise in submersible sewage pumps, submersible jet aerators and dewatering pumps which find application in most ETPs and STPs.

If it’s about making the world a liveable place by promoting cleanliness while extracting the right things from even wastes and slurries, this P & G combine does seem to be doing the right thing at the right time, and in the Indian context, with the right quality!

It all began in the year 2001 when long-time friends, Abhay Puranik, an Automobile Engineer by qualification and Prasad Gokhale, a BSc with 10 years in employment, thought of putting their experience to good use and branched out on their own.

Green Pumps came about from their collective experiences and an urge to do better and be the master of their own destinies. They began by trading in standard, generic pumps manufactured by known entities in India which found application in most industries and situations.

Time brought experience and experience, clarity. With their existing venture facing the constant pressure from competition, it was in the year 2007 that the duo thought of getting into the field of specialised pumps and related equipment. With the right experience, foresight and expertise, they got into the field of submersible sewage pumps, submersible jet aerators and submersible dewatering pumps, both as manufacturers and traders.Their plants are known today to make some of the best pumps and machines which number close to 1,000 per year and grace plants and applications as far apart as STPs, ETPs, Fly-ash plants, Gobar and Bio-gas plants etc to name a few. Entities such as Urja Bio Systems Pvt. Ltd., AT & S, Sandvik Asia, CIPLA Ltd, SLPP, Noble Exchange and Texol are known to have installed their pumps.

What started in the year 2001 with a modest sum of INR 3 lacs and a fistful of clients has over two decades multiplied to INR 2.5 crores with clients numbering close to 100 who were supplied pumps of various kinds! If that’s not success, what is! And this, in the face of competition from both domestic players as also those abroad, especially China. These numbers the duo wants increase to INR 10 crores with 200 clients and 2500 pumps per year in the forseable future.

Their journey till now had its own ups and downs. With products that seemed expensive initially, and without the backing of a big name, it looked like they didn’t stand a chance. But when the duo made up their mind, it was competition that didn’t stand a chance. Clients over time realized that the extra they paid was more than made up by the excellent quality of their products which out-lasted almost anything that their competitors could ever provide.

One other factor which stood in Green Pumps’ favour was their readiness with spares and accessories. While using competitors’ products (including some known MNCs!) Green Pumps’ clients constantly faced spares stock-outs which brought entire operations to a halt. With Green Pumps things though are radically different, as is the case with one of their customers in Mysore who has gone ahead and ordered 25 to 30 more pumps! On the issue of spares and stock-outs, Green Pumps has committed itself to stock supplies which shall easily last the next 10 to 15 years!

In the slurry pump business, there’s nothing like a “standard size”. And this is one more reason they stand out and remain their clients’ favourite! The clients tell them what they want, and in return get exactly as per their needs- sometimes with suggestions & additions of the makers!

As for Green Pumps’ onward march, things seem very bright. Entities known to generate slurry be it waste-related or otherwise, like thermal power plants generating fly-ash, hotels & restaurants, large housing societies, airports, seaports, railway stations etc are being built in ever-increasing numbers. And with them comes the need for effluent and sewage treatment, and ecological issues. With laws becoming ever stringent every day, this is one field likely to look up for quite a while which makes Green Pumps’ case stronger!

One other field where their products are increasing finding use is cow-dung gas (gobar gas) plants. Dairies and poultry farms like VRK Nutritional Solution, Technovet Pharma, Srinivasa Hatcheries, Om Chicks India to name a few, are known to use Green Pumps’ slurry pumps to transfer poultry litter and cow dung slurry.

Growth come with its own share of pains. In Green Pumps’ case, it about finding the right people to further its ambitious targets. With competition, the field offers great employment opportunity, more so for those with the right experience. Green Pumps has thus changed its strategy. It now trains local youth with the right qualifications to represent it in the right places. A win-win situation, it shows the organisation’s and its management’s commitment towards the society where they belong to.

Finance is the life-blood of any business and the same holds true for Green Pumps. With its business set to increase exponentially in the near future, this is one entity investors should keep track of.
