A profile of Advocate Vaishali Rana who is as much legal as financial!

She’s a lawyer who is in love with her work! It sees her assisting everyone from the super-rich to the extremely poor. It comes from an experience of having been swindled out of their property early in life. It shook her to the core and got her thinking about those with neither the knowledge nor the means to fight for their rights. The other, and a rather innocent need, was to have degree and qualification certificates aplenty, a dream that she carries from her earliest employment, coincidentally at a lawyer’s!

Adv Vaishali Rana’s life has seen its share of unexpected dips, despite which she has turned every disadvantage into an advantage and is today one of the most intrepid and creative lawyers and finance professionals in Pune.

Life for her began in a typical Indian middle-class household, with her father being employed with the erstwhile MSEB. She was a mere 12 when tragedy struck. A paralytic attack left her father, and their sole breadwinner incapacitated, putting the burden of running a young family that included her two siblings squarely on her mother. It also meant she went to work immediately after school. As luck would have it, her first employment was with a lawyer. Her earliest engagements included working with known entities, including Bharat Forge and Vascon Engineers, in their legal department.

While jobs never gave her the satisfaction she gets today from her work as a lawyer, they gave her the liberty to do something she always wanted! Certificates! M Com, JDCA, DFATP, ADCC, and today LLB! She’s lived her dream and got what she wanted on her terms.

Cutting short her march towards credentials, degrees, and certificates was matrimony in the year 2001. Chaitanya Rana, her significant half, an ace with loans and debts with his own DSA then, was the one who suggested she take up law as a career with a qualification, an LLB. It finally saw fruition in 2007- much after a family happened that included two children, the second being a mere toddler then! Hubby and Mother-in-law supported her at each step.

What set her apart from others in the field was her body of work with the poor. While it was about serving society, it gave her exposure in the right area, i.e., property litigation. Extending her scope ever since, she also deals with housing societies, criminal cases, and divorces. Besides, she also extends a helping hand to the elderly who are troubled by their own at home, including their children, daughter/ son-in-law, and other relatives. To this end, her stint in 2014 with the District Legal Service Authority (DLSA), a government-driven initiative to provide justice through lawyers’ voluntary work, is commendable.

That said, it’s in property-related disputes that she truly comes into her own. Her knowledge of loans, debts, etc., courtesy of her husband’s DSA experience, means she understands things from many angles and can provide comprehensive solutions to property-related problems that bring long-term relief to all the stakeholders involved. She mentions a particularly twisted case of property purchase in the heart of Pune, i.e., Sadashiv Peth. A broker swindled her client into buying a property with unclear, multiple, overlapping titles, unpaid loans, long-pending issues, and more. With the tenacity of a detective, she got every knot untangled and fixed every problem. In the process, she ended up preparing 7 to 8 sets of entirely independent documents (as against 2 to 3 under normal circumstances)! Quite a feat it was, for which the industry admires her tenacity to this day.

Hard work pays off in time. It certainly has for Adv Vaishali Rana, who today has a Pan-India client base of 1500 that includes known names in India, individuals and corporate bodies. They come to her believing that she won’t line her pockets at their expense and that she will go out of her way to support them and provide sound counsel. To this end, she has been working with known specialist lawyers in her field, besides CAs and CSs, whose commitment to the field remains unquestioned.

Her idol she sees in the late Sushma Swaraj, a politician with a heart who is known to have gone the extra mile, even for enemies in times of need. Taking a cue from her life, Adv Vaishali Rana too wants to continue helping people in every way, more so in property-related litigation, an area that she says has immense potential. She plans to make people aware of what the law says and what is available to them, even without approaching lawyers for help.

Would you believe she is an avid traveller! Yes, the travel bug bit her some time back. But bit it really hard, which sees her take off at the slightest pretext to places less known but very accessible. Here too, she has a dream- of traveling the length and breadth of India.
