Anita Patil – The Fierce Woman of Pharma

Anita is a fierce woman encroaching the male-dominant field of pharmaceuticals. She has had an inclination towards the medical field since her childhood. She has successfully transformed her passion into her professional career, creating a landmark presence in pharmaceutical industry.

Anita is born and brought up in Pune. She was aspiring to get admission to MBBS after completing her HSC from Ferguson college. Although she was a bright student her family’s economic conditions and conservative mindset of decision makers in the family did not permit her to study medicine.  Some of her relatives even advised her to take up a BA degree because they wanted easy matrimonial match for her. Back then it was strong belief in the society that higher education prohibits girl to find right match at right time. Finally, her determination to take good education and ability to fight for her decision conquered overall and she took admission to the B.Sc. (Chemistry) and completed course successfully in 1993.

Anita could join Yash Pharma as a Medical Representative in 1996 as after her graduation she was fighting her personal battles with immediate family and societal beliefs and thoughts. She grabbed all the skills related to her job in a very short span. In 2001, just span of four years she acquired the position of Regional Manager in USV Pharma. She had a team of about 40 women reporting to her directly. She was satisfied for one simple reason that though she was unable to be a doctor by herself, she was daily interacting with doctors and working in a field that is closely associated with medicines and utilizing her formal chemistry training. While engaged in this pharmaceutical field, she eventually met her soul mate who was also working in the same field. They both started dreaming together to start their business. Mr. Patil first quit his job and jumped into business world in 2003. However, to have steady income in the family, Anita continued her job for another three years before she could devote her full time to their dream of life. Finally, in 2006, she joined her life partner as business partner in Umed Pharma. In 2012, they also ventured into Eumed Healthcare. Through Eumed Healthcare they have manufactured their own 30-35 registered products and having a turnover above five crores. For the last 2 years. Eumed Healthcare is also exporting Vitamin – D 3 drops to Malaysia.

Anita plays a key role in ‘Umed Pharma’. She takes care of accounting, administration, purchase, sales. Mr Patil looks after marketing. Switching over from a highly secure and sophisticated job to a business was not so easy for both of them. they had a status, a thick package, lucrative incentives in the job. Business means challenges every moment, there was a totally upside-down picture in the business. There was no certainty of income. They both had only one point of satisfaction and that was, they are doing all this for themselves, not for some other company, this ethos kept them motivated in spite of several hurdles.

Ms. Anita is the only lady in this business in the area of Sadashiv Peth, Pune where all other Pharma business owners are males. This was possible because it is her passion. In one incidence, she applied for the tender of Command Hospital. She was the only lady in the meeting of all tenderers, called by the Command Hospital administration. Some of them tried to check my patience saying, “It is very hard to get the tender. Even if you get it how are you going to manage the officers?” The fierce lady Anita replied in her style, “Don’t worry, I am enough capable of that.” Surprisingly I got ample business from the Command Hospital on the very first attempt.

A very hard time hit Anita at the end of 2021. She was diagnosed with kidney cancer. As a part of treatment, one of her kidneys was removed in an operation along with a small part of bladder and ovaries. All this treatment period was toughest period of her life and she came out of it safely.

Till now, Anita has traveled to 35 countries and gained experience from every country. Now after the operation, she feels that this is her second, bonus life. Money has secondary status in her life. She wants to dedicate her remaining life to societal causes. She is working on a new venture “Luminous Moments” which is related to Farmers and modern ways of Farming. She is planning to organize knowledge sharing tours for students and farmers to Israel to understand modern techniques of farming. Helping aspiring and existing farmers to understand Israeli models of agriculture and then providing necessary assistance in setting up agribusiness based on the expedition to Israel. Now her new venture aims to give end to end services for agribusiness *farm to fork model.

She has a strong social connection. She was the President of Rotary Club, Pune Shaniwar Wada. In this capacity, she organized an event for social cause in which 200 songs were sung by various people of age group 10 to 75. This event got massive attention and her name appeared in World book records, London.

How can one forget about family! Anita and her soul mate have raised three children together.
Jasmin completed her hotel management degree from London, and MBA from Ireland.
Rachana completed her masters in Biotechnology from India and MS in Project Management from United States. Rachana is now working in Boston based firm and enjoying her married life with Tanuj Baldota who is qualified Pharmacy professional specialized in drugs and regulatory affairs.
Umed completed his masters in economics from Gokhale Institute, Pune and pursing his passion for theater.
